    Default Is Alsace-Lorraine German or French?

    Want to learn a bit about the history behind the region. I was wondering if the region was originally populated by German peoples or by the French?

    Thread isn't about whether the land should be given to Germany but rather about the background of Alsace-Lorraine... or should I say Elsaß-Lothringen?

    It's a cultural mix of French and German, really. It's been part of both France and Germany at various points in history.

    I think the Alsace locals have stopped caring, long ago.

    @FMN

    Why don't you just research it for yourself?
    Eine Nation aber, die ihre komplette Geschichte verwirft und unter moralischen, ja kriminellen Generalverdacht stellt, konzediert ihre eigene Unmöglichkeit und gibt den moralischen Anspruch auf eine selbstbestimmte Zukunft preis.

    Because I think it'd be interesting to have a discussion on the topic?

    Alsace is French because it is German. It's a long story, a long and intricate story...

    Alsatian way of life and mindset are absolutely Germanic and have been for nearly two thousand years. But at the same time it is a stronghold of French patriotism, but on the German way, with Treue and Gründlichkeit.

    My grand-grand-father was from Drulingen, North-Alsace, he was a French jingoistic fanatic and he was at the same time in love with German culture, but absolutely allergic to Germany as a state... I could tell you for hours or for weeks on the matter...

    Let's put it short: due to its geographical location Alsace, while being a flourishing center of German art and litterature, was since the Middle Ages involved in internal French wars and tended to side with the French king against his enemies (the Bourguignons, etc.).

    Then came the Thirty Years' War, the founding event in German history. Alsace paid a terrible toll, with over 50 percent of population starving to death. The province was the Austrian, French and Swedish armies' favourite battlefield. At the end of the war Alsace ended up under French authority, and Alsace entered (like all German provinces) an unprecedented era of prosperity in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Since then they've retained that being French, and Frenchier than anything French, was the right thing to do.
