Would you approach the other gender in public and how?

I find myself sometimes in the situation that I find a female interesting I met on a public place (like drug store, supermarket, or just on the streets or like that) and she is a complete stranger. If you were in such a situation would you approach her and how? I never do though and dont know how.

Men have either picked a related topic to whatever I was doing and talked to me about it, or just straight up said they wanted to get with me. I don’t recommend the latter. It gives a bad impression and the success rate is really low unless you have a lot of confidence or charisma.
