I visited Budapest in 2010. Beautiful city and lovely people, Hungarians are friendly and very polite. At least they were then, IDK now.
Editing: a Hungarian? pickpocket stole the phone from a friend of mine when he left the subway in the city center.

Yes eastern and east-central european ghettos are more dangerous with higher crime rate and significant organized crime. Yes there are no gang rapes and terror attacks in Hungary but look the violence, robbery statistics, murder rate etc. There are many area in Hungary where nobody goes including police.

Crime rate? Hungary does not stand on such a bad place according to EU stats... Of course, I would not say it is better than all of other countries... At least we don't have that much shootings, knife attacks, and gang wars.
But why drag down my post now? Yes, there are places, where it's ghetto. Still Budapest is a lovely place.

I was in Budapest like 10 times, but in center only once and that was long time ago, it's pretty sad, considering my grandma lives only like 45 mins away.
