Default Population of Mexico in 1850

I found this data about the population size of Mexico in 1850:

    https://www2.census.gov/library/publ...n/1860a-02.pdf - on PDF page 49/152

    Southern Mexico - 3,782,220 inhabitants:

    Yucatan - 680,948
    Tabasco - 63,508
    Chiapas - 144,070
    Veracruz - 264,725
    Oaxaca - 525,101
    Guerrero - 270,000
    Puebla - 580,000
    Tlaxcala territory - 80,171
    Federal District - 200,000
    Mexico - 973,697

    Central Mexico - 2,956,271 inhabitants:

    Michoacan* - 491,679
    Colima territory - 68,243
    Jalisco - 774,461
    Queretaro - 184,161
    Guanajuato - 713,583
    San Luis Potosi - 368,120
    Zacatecas - 356,024

    Northern Mexico - 928,057 inhabitants:

    Tamaulipas - 100,064
    Nuevo Leon - 133,361
    Coahuila - 75,340
    Durango - 162,218
    Sinaloa - 160,000
    Chihuahua - 147,600
    Sonora - 139,474
    Baja California - 10,000

*I'm not sure if Michoacan counts as Central, or Southern?

    =====

So it seems that in 1850 Northern Mexico was the least populous part and Southern Mexico the most populous.

Today it is the other way around. I guess most of new immigration after 1850 went mainly to Northern Mexico.

This also explains why the north is more Euro-admixed today.

In fact north Mexico has grown its population because the inmigration of southern people, not european one (this went to Monterrey during the XIX and the beginning of the XX century, but Monterrey it´s not all northern Mexico, and the population impact of the southern inmigration is way bigger in the region)

As many maquiladoras installed in the northernmost cities of the countries (Ciudad Juárez, Mexicali and Tijuana specially), other cities became important national-industrial poles (La Laguna region and Monterrey thankt to the steel factories, for example) and in the last two decades Baja California Sur has become an important touristic place (has even a ATP tennis tournament in summer) because Acapulco is now beaten by the narco violence, all this atracted many workers from the impoverished south.

Also many whitish people from northern Mexico began to inmigrate in mass to the USA after the Mexican Revolution that began in 1910, that kicked strongly the zone. Mexico had 15 160 369 inhabitants in 1910, in 1921 had 14 334 780 inhabitants; we must take into account that this was an age of strong demographic growth, the historians calculate that between 1,5 and 3 million people died. So the people begann to fled in big numbers, and this inmigration of northern people continued during decades after the Revolution.

Northern Mexico is way less white than one century ago.

You have grouped the states bad.

    This is more correct.

    Blue zones --- North Mexico

Red, yellow and light green --- Central Mexico (San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas are a transitional zone between north and south)

    Strong green --- South Mexico

This was the proposal that made years ago in a facebook group of segregating the north in the República de Aridoamérica.

Going by the same classification of regions as Southern/Central/Northern, today it looks like this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._by_population

    Southern Mexico - 65,035,654 inhabitants (55%)
    Central Mexico - 27,823,208 inhabitants (23%)
    Northern Mexico - 26,671,891 inhabitants (22%)

    Compared to 1850:

    Southern Mexico - 3,782,220 inhabitants (49%)
    Central Mexico - 2,956,271 inhabitants (39%)
    Northern Mexico - 928,057 inhabitants (12%)

    =====

Okay it seems that I had a wrong impression about Northern Mexico because of misleading stats:

    https://www.theapricity.com/forum/sh...n-Mexico/page5

^^^ These are the stats I had in mind:

    Northern Mexico - 928,057 (12%)

    *Including Federal District - 200,000

    Today:

    Southern Mexico - 27,725,493 (23%)
    Central Mexico - 65,133,369* (55%)
    Northern Mexico - 26,671,891 (22%)

So Northern Mexico increased its share from over 1/10 to over 1/5 close to 1/4, while Southern and Central remained similar.

I honestly don't know how did Carlito manage to calculate that North/Western-Central Mexico has 42% of Mexican population?

Yeah I guess it makes sense.

    Edit:

BTW, do you know what was the population around 1840-1845 of Mexican territories lost to the USA in 1846-1848?

Back in the 1920-1940-s when Northern Mexico was getting industrialized most Mexican immigration came from Central And west Central Mexico and Northern Mexico. Monterrey was flooded with people from San Luis Potosi ,Zacatecas and other Northern Mexicans back in 1920-1940's.

Southern Mexicans started to immigrate to Northern Mexico's late in 1970's.
Southern Mexicans have tradionally immigrated to Mexico City and in the 1970's to Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

Baja California main Mexican immigration has been people from Sinaloa,Jalisco.People with Sinaloa origins make up 1/3 of Baja California pop.Sonorenses and other Nortenos 15% West-Central Mexicans make up 35% of Northern California.
75% has been Northern Mexican and West-central Mexicans.

Zacatecas,San Luis Potosi,Nayarit,. Only 25% of the Mexican immigration has been from Northern Mexico.

Very interesting. I thought the north was more populated. It seems it recieved population from other areas.
