Why isn't the Dutch Flag Orange?

William of Orange. Orange tulip fields. Footballers playing in orange. No colour is more associated with the Netherlands, so it might come as a surprise that it does not appear on its flag. But once upon a time it did, and it was the standard that the top stripe of the horizontal tricolour was an orange rather than a red. What caused this to change?

Another reason could be that orange, white, blue is a weak color combination.

Most flags today are blue,white,red because those colors signal much more strenght, authority, dominance and power.
You can't have a flag that signals weakness and softness.

No. I would not. I am a Republican - in other words: Staatsgezind.

Italy removed the Savoy emblem (encircled in blue)when it became a republic.

since the Netherlands is still a monarchy I already wondered about this too.

both countries still use it for athletic teams though

Personally, I think that if we were to become a republic, we should use the old Generaliteitsleeuw but remove the crown and go from seven arrows to twelve. The flag should remain red-white and blue. We could either keep using orange for the football team or move to something in red-white and blue. The motto should also be altered from the Royal motto of "Je maintiendrai" ("I shall maintain") to "Concordia res parvae crescunt" ("small things flourish by concord" or "unity makes strenght") or its Dutch translation "Eenheid maakt macht".
