Greece flies first fighter jet over North Macedonia

Greece on Tuesday conducted its first fighter jet flight over North Macedonia, in a mission that was carried out by an F-16 from the Hellenic Tactical Air Force's 110 Combat Wing, based in Larissa.

The purpose of the mission was to locate any radar blank sectors and to test the compatibility of reconnaissance systems.

Tuesday's mission was a test flight and will be followed by more over the coming months.

Surveillance of North Macedonia's air space was part of the name deal signed between Athens and Skopje last summer, and has been part of NATO policy for the past 12 years.

Greece already conducts surveillance over Montenegro and Albania.

With Turkey as Greece's neighbor, I really don't think that fighter jets are a waste of fuel. The same thing goes for Armenia's military endeavors. I need only mention that Turkey has violated Greece's airspace, on countless occasions.

Yea, I took a closer look at the OP, after making that comment; and, I now realize that the aircraft is being deployed in the wrong area (over FRYOM). So you're correct, and I agree. But, that jet aircraft can still be held in reserve, to reinforce Greek aircrafts on the Turkish front. I don't know what the heck they're thinking -- clearly Turkey is the real threat.

The operating hour of a f-16 is about 8000$. Given our miserable financial situation, it is really a waste of resources protecting the air space of insignificant countries wich have no enemies anyway. I hope we are getting money for this.

Every jet take off costs several thousands of dollars. Nice plan to impoverish already bankrupt greece.
