Huawei says its own operating system could be ready this year if it can’t use Google or Microsoft

Huawei could have its own operating system for smartphones and laptops ready for use in China by fall this year, the head of the company’s consumer division told CNBC.

Still, he stressed that would only happen if the company were completely stopped from using Google’s and Microsoft’s software.

The Chinese technology giant was placed on a U.S. blacklist that required American firms to get permission from the government before selling anything to Huawei. That meant Huawei would no longer be able to license the version of Google’s Android operating system that’s complete with all of the U.S. firm’s services.

However, Washington granted a temporary 90-day reprieve for Huawei, which will allow it to continue using American technology — for now.

Huawei has said in the past that it has its own operating system waiting in the wings if it were to be permanently blocked from Google and Microsoft software. Now, one of the company’s top executives has told CNBC that the operating system could be ready by the fourth quarter of this year, with a version for its markets outside of China available in either the first or second quarter of 2020.

“Today, Huawei, we are still committed to Microsoft Windows and Google Android. But if we cannot use that, Huawei will prepare the plan B to use our own OS,” Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, told CNBC on Thursday.

If Huawei isn’t allowed to use Android, it could be damaging because the phones won’t have the Google Play Store where consumers can download apps. Instead, users would need to find other ways to install their favorite applications.

However, Yu said Huawei’s own app store, known as the App Gallery, would be available on its own operating system. The App Gallery is installed on Huawei’s devices currently, but Google’s Play Store is often the default app store for consumers.

The Huawei executive stressed that Huawei’s own operating system would only be rolled out if the company were permanently blocked from using Google or Microsoft products.

“We don’t want to do this but we will forced to do that because of the U.S. government. I think the U.S., this kind of thing, will also not only be bad news for us, but also bad news for the U.S. companies because we support the U.S. business, so we will be forced to do this on our own,” Yu said. “We don’t want to do this but we have no other solution, no other choice.”

I doubt it. I actually think they will put forth rivalling systems which will become more attractive to Western consumers (those same Western consumers who have already learned to loathe Google etc.) It's still choosing between the rope and the bullet but still..

LMAO, it looks like Beijing Headquarters is reading Apricity forum. Just today came to news that Huawei is considering using Sailfish systems in their smartphones - just it comes with Russian twist. Sailfish is a Meego based system further developed by Jolla. I have to say I had no idea Jolla had sold Sailfish to Russians. Boys at Jolla must be little bummed with recent developments, they would have made lot more money dealing directly with Huawei.

Huawei and Russia discuss using Sailfish Aurora OS on future smartphones

Reports from Russian media indicate that before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum representatives from Huawei have met with the Minister of digital development and communications of Russia to discuss the possibility of using Aurora OS on future Huawei smartphones.
Aurora OS is a version of Sailfish OS in majority ownership by Russian state telecom Rostelecom and designated for the Russian market. Aurora OS is the only officially approved OS in Russia for use by government agencies and Russia plans to replace all other devices used by the state with 8 million Aurora-running smartphones in the future.
According to two sources of TheBell, the publication that broke this story, the question of Huawei using Russia’s Aurora OS was raised during the meeting of Russian president Vladimir Putin and China’s president Xi Jinping. The same source mentions that China is already testing devices with Aurora OS and we know from before that Sailfish is officially present in China. Apart from Huawei and other using OS, the discussions also mentioned the possibility of setting up joint ventures in Russia for production of silicone and software.
Report from China’s Global Times published on Monday mentioned that Huawei’s replacement OS for Android called HongMeng is being tested by other Chinese companies, including BBK brands OPPO and VIVO, Xiaomi and the software giant Tencent. HongMeng is reportedly 60% faster than Android and is already installed on one million test devices.
The ongoing trade war is turning out to be a huge catalyst for change in the technology sector. One call also view these reports as warnings or propaganda that Huawei isn’t alone in this situation and if a new OS is adopted by all Chinese OEMs, Android’s dominance on the smartphone market might come in question.
It’s still too early to tell how this story could end. I’m excited for the possibility of Sailfish/AuroraOS gaining more traction and it will be interesting to see how other big global players, like the EU or India will react to the consequences of the ongoing US-China trade dispute.
