But, on the other hand, plenty of crypto-Jews and Moriscos sailed with Columbus and became conquistadores who ultimately were so fond of racial mixing that they (conquistadores) literally changed almost the entire genome of two continents to create a new mestizo race. Sure, they promoted their culture and religion, but they certainly didn't believe in racial purity. Love to see some of the ultra-Spaniards reconcile that...

I also don't see how anyone can truly reconcile an obsession with racial purity and anti-semitism with a religion that was founded by a Jew.

The pre-Roman Iberians, the Romans, the Basques, Germanic invaders and reconquista Catholics all contributed to Iberia/Spain's rich heritage, but the height of pre-modern Iberian culture was the Emirate of Granada in my opinion.

You are mistaking conquistadores with colonists and settlers.

I could be wrong, but that's not how I thought New Spain was populated/settled.

My understanding is that there weren't really very many colonists or settlers. New Spain was primarily settled by conquistadores and other military men - bachelors in most cases. Later, junior civil servants and military officers (also usually bachelors) would be sent to the Americas for administartive purposes. Most simply rotated out through the Americas before landing a more senior job back in Spain, and those who stayed tended to marry into the local native population.

Areas that did have larger colonist and settler populations, from my understanding, tended to be settled primarily by French traders who were either free-trappers (coureur de bois) who did not work for a company or those who rejected British rule over Canada/New France.

I might be wrong, but that's always been my understanding of the situation, and I can tell you for sure that that was the case in my region of New Spain (Natchez).
