Question to non-English speakers: how'd you react if your government announced the following?

I'd like to think that all countries worldwide would oppose the idea. English is definitely useful as a medium in which to communicate effectively on a global scale, but I wouldn't want it to eradicate any existing languages. I hope every country holds on to their native tongue for as long as they can, it's part of a rich tapestry of culture unique to each place - and that's a wonderful thing.

Yes but that's only native speakers. The picture is rather different when you look at non-native speakers too.

People who butchered Celts in Britain to the level of extinction do not care about Celtic languages nor they ever will.

The Celts never went extinct - even when the brutal Romans invaded and visciously slaughtered the Celts in Great Britain and in other areas of Europe.

By the time the Romans had retreated from Great Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire... the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes settled into England... before the Norse and Danish Viking settlements... and before the Norman Conquest... but the Celts were never slaughtered. They were said to be pushed out into the western regions of England and Wales and Cornwall... and some other Celts left Great Britain and settled in Brittany.

The Normans forced a new language onto the English (hence the reason why we have over 15,000 words of French origin in the English vocabulary.)

The English people are genetically shown to have at least 50% or higher Celtic genes. English people also look physically closer to Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Manx, and Irish people, than to German people. We generally have a lot of little freckles and very fair skin that burns easily in the sun, and we also have very fine and more gracile facial features. Germans tend to have broader heads and necks.

A new language and culture was forced onto the inhabitants of England... but our genes remain predominantly Celtic.


The name England originates from Engel Land... (Land of the Engels.) The word Engel translates as Angel in Danish, German, Dutch, etc.

The Dutch word for English is Engels... and the Dutch word for angel is also engel. Engeland is the Dutch name for England... and Engeland is also the original Anglo Saxon name for England.

Albion is the more ancient name for our island and the name 'Albion' for Great Britain originates from sailors seeing the sight of the white cliffs of Dover in south-east England.
