    Didn't know it's such a issuse. what's the reason ? Lithuania isn't poor, it's pretty stable, safe and economy is growing, no migrants

    If you look at population projections by 2050/2100, Lithuania's population is projected to decline more than in other parts of Europe:

    I was there (coming by car from North-East Poland) during this weekend and it is not my impression. There was a lot of hilly terrain actually, also very nice lakes in Meteliai Regional Park. I entered from Augustów direction towards Alytus and visited Dzukija region.

    Have you been to Trakai Island Castle?

    =====

    What striked me is how archaic and very Eastern European the villages look like.

    In villages of Eastern Poland (Lubelskie, Podlaskie), I would estimate over 50% of houses look new (they look 1990s or 2000s style). I suppose it is related to some deurbanization processes (migration from cities to the countryside) or just people replacing wooden houses by brick houses.

    Meanwhile in Lithuanian villages hardly anything looks new and most houses are wooden and look like they were built in the early 1900s or earlier.

    This is the contrast I noticed after crossing the border.

    In Western Poland where I'm from already in the 1800s most of rural buildings were made of brick because of Prussian fire prevention laws (erecting new wooden houses was Verboten).

    Their landscape is not boring either, with plenty of lakes and forests

    They have the highest rate of suicides in Europe, albeit it may something more to do with a lacking high-quality psychiatric support, it is sadly in Poland a problem. Also the salaries in their country are pretty low in general (lower than in Poland for instance), as poor is their health (one of the last countries in Europe considering life expectancy and one of the highest rates of hypertension.
