Finland needs allies just like everyone else, there is no way they can take on Russia by themselves. Cooperation now doesn't mean anything 10 years down the road when the Russian economy hits hard times and they go looking for new states, nobody is invincible and Finland is a small country.

Not sure about about that, but no doubt Finns purpose has been to made the price of that as expensive as possible (both direct but also indirect/world wide...politically) ... to reduce any interests for that. For Finns for example EU is more than just EU to central Europeans. Mentally. It is being apart of something.

Hell, we're among the originals. There was no Norway prior the late 9th century. The name "Norwegian" to Danes and Swedes, was just understood to mean "kinsmen that made their way over the Northern ridges to settle and conquer." Even before Gorm there was no doubt what Denmark was and were their borders would stand. Danes merely subjugated North Sea Germans, like Swedes subjugated Geats and Gutones as well as some Finnic tribes. All accounts agree they're not first cousins but fraternal twins so, I fail to see what's the requirement then. A compulsory Sami minority?
