It seems before his jousting accident, he was a pretty nice guy. Almost a romantic. I think he wanted a male heir so bad, that he got obsessed with finding the right woman. He loved Ann Boylen, but he become jaded and believed in the gossip about her infidelity. It made him feel emasculated. Maybe the jousting accident turned him into a slight sociopath, because he had a brain injury and chronic health issues from it . He is rather maligned in history. Sad.
