I’m going to visit Croatia someday - can you suggest an interesting and not too mainstream route around the country for an "wild" (by car) tourist?

Yes Don't use motorway but local roads like Adriatic D8 which starts in North Adriatic and goes all the way south to Dubrovnik, following the coast by sea !


Than you can stop in beautiful coastal towns and take ferry/boat to visit Islands. Islands are the best!
But also you should visit inland north Croatia too, lot to offer!

Rijeka as city is very interesting but not pretty, but has most beautiful surrounding in the world (Alps, Islands, mountains)

There is some symbolism, like man in astronaut suit. It is because one of founders of Soviet and later NASA space programs was born in Rijeka.
They tried to promote industry Rijeka is famous for (now decayed, ship in beginning is former Tito Presidential Yacht) and open mindness like LGBT, because city is notoriously leftist.

But it is a failure. You are right it doesn't promote city at all. They did not put any major landmark except industry in video.
No Trsat Castle, no Churches, no famous Rijeka stadium in the quarry, torpedo launching ramp, no nothing, no Učka mountain and Opatija and Islands in surroundings.

It looks like any rust belt town in US. And I don't understand girl on horse, horses aren't seen in city at all lol.

Many people are angry half million euro went into waste. If they wanted to show real multiculturalism, they should have showed our churches (3 christian branches), mosque, synagogue , LGBT ballet guy with Rijeka Ultras togheder.
