The understanding is generally restricted to the same sub-family of Slavic languages, in my opinion. It all also depends on what kind of contact one has had with the other Slavic languages, as they're very easy to pick up when you know at least one. But for me, outside the South Slavic languages, I think Ukrainian and Slovak are the easiest to understand and Polish the hardest. I honestly think I understand Dutch better than Polish.

I know Russian and Ukrainian and understand at least half of probably any Slavic language (Serbian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian etc.).

btw Russians do not understand the Ukrainian language. Put a Russian to hear news in the Ukrainian language and he will understand almost nothing.

I was very surprised the first time I heard Slovak. It was some news report on youtube about languages and it took me a while to realise that I understood almost everything But sometimes I can understand very little, maybe some dialect differences?

Macedonian is probably easiest for me to understand, but not completely (yes, it is funny for Serbs), I'm not really familiar with Slovenian but probably wouldn't understand much. In general Russian and other east Slavic languages are more understandable than western Slavic languages for me but it is more like you are hearing someone speaks something familiar but you often don't understand anything at first, then if you listen more carefully and then you understand like 50% (edit:23%) of general meaning of speech.

There are differences, I would say that you can understand probably like 35% in common sentences. Yeah it's possible that one sentence you understand completely and the other one not at all Recently I thought Slovenian language is pretty alien for us, based on what I've heard, but reading some articles its pretty godamn simillar even more than other yugo, probably like 40-45%. Its always the different style of saying a word, I mean - Serbian : (Odakle )Slovakian : (Odkadial) - Looks different but its same, once person gets in touch, the whole language reveals itself, wouldnt take you long to learn Slovakian imo.
