A woman has died in hospital a week after being bitten by a dog, Lancashire police have said.

Sharon Jennings, 55, had been walking on the old railway lines in Brookfield, Preston, on 31 May when her own dog began to fight with another dog.

Police say she was bitten on the hand and neck after intervening.

They want to trace the dog - described as being speckled ginger and black and of medium height - and its owner, a man with thinning grey-black hair.

They appealed to the man, said to have been wearing a blue fleece-type jacket, to come forward.

Det Insp Chris Wellard added: "Our thoughts are with Sharon's family and friends at this incredibly distressing time.

"We're working hard to establish what happened but need anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible."

Police said Ms Jennings had been out walking her dog between 18:00 and 19:30 BST.

They say she was found unwell at her home on 3 June and taken to Royal Preston Hospital, where she died four days later.

Why must these peapole have their dog loose? I am tired to almost getting bitten by a big dog every single time I take a walk. It is ileagal to have the dog loose in public areas. Persons that do this is often the same peapole who compliant and cries about some kids playing with smal fireworks 1 hour before next year in new year.

I couldn't agree more. I would go so far as to say the majority of dog owners are not qualified in the slightest to care for dogs properly, and that they force human-like ideals onto them as though they were perpetual children and not descendants of wolves. Anthropomorphizing of animals to have human thoughts and emotions is a problem that is rising due to isolation and social underdevelopment of the 21st century.

Dog should be killed

Based on what? Dog fights are common, that doesnt mean there is a problem with the dogs. In that case people who fight should be killed off too. The dog needs to be re-evaluated by a vet and behaviour specialist to determine of its a danger or not. You dont get to decide that.

If a dog kills a human it should be killed it is an animal not some innocent child why waste money on it?

Depends. What if your dog kills some robber in your house? What if the reason you have a dog is to protect your private territory?

Some robber it is okay but i talked about killing some random person in public area.
