It's a lot easier to look 'technically superior' when the pace of the game is sloth-like and and there's hardly any pressure off the ball.

I don't agree with the claim of course, but to the untrained eye it may seem that way. The same way when you watch old matches the more skillful technically gifted players had a lot more time on the ball and less pressure, which leads people to think the game is less technical or skillful now.
