How did Ukrainians got there and why?

When in 1858-1860 the Russian Empire took the northern coast of the Amur and Primorye from the Chinese Qing Empire, these lands were not inhabited and remained so for the first quarter of a century of Russian rule. Vladivostok was a small fleet base in the middle of deserted spaces.

The Russian Tsar realizes that he can keep these territories only if his people live there. And since the Trans-Siberian Railway was not constracted yet, the only option was to send steamships from Odessa (one and a half month, route from Odessa, through Beaufort and the Suez Canal, past India, China, Korea and Japan to Vladivostok).

Only on April 13 and 20, 1883, the two first passenger steamships “Russia” and “Petersburg” arrived there from Odessa, carrying 1504 migrants from the Chernigov province. They founded the first nine villages in the south of Primorye.

Odessa has long been the main link with the Russian Far East. Therefore, it is not surprising that immigrants from Ukraine prevailed among the migrants. In the first decade of the Russian colonization of Primorye, from 1883 to 1892, people from Ukraine accounted for 89.2% of all immigrants.

I actually want to check out Vladivostok just for the Hell of it. It's one of those interesting anomalies; the easternmost Russian city (etymology ~ "Conqueror of the East", lol). Maybe I'll go when I've learned a decent amount of Russian in 1-3 years.
