I know it used to be free to do a simple family tree but the catch is you have to pay to use their research tools. They have an account called Ancestry Library which give you access to lots of legal, census, newspaper, and other documents. It has nothing to do with the DNA testing. Most of it is for English speaking countries. I use this to peace together my family tree where there are gaps. Have you tested through AncestryDNA?

That is pretty cool that you can go that far back. My mom had one great grandmother that was English (the rest were Irish) and that was the only reason I could trace it back as far as I did. Apparently they were from Kent.

You have to be lucky tbh. This line was traced by Mormons in America who are also descended from the same Bower line (Anglicised from de la Boure in the 14th century) in Derbyshire as me. Mormons are the fount of all knowledge it seems.
    Spoiler!

Yes, when it comes to genealogy, all hail the Mormons. They have a monopoly on that shit. It helps that they are mostly English and Scandinavian as far as record keeping goes.

A great grandfather from my Venezuelan dad's side (the paternal grand father of my paternal grand father. ie: the grandpa of the father of my dad) who was an Italian immigrant that settled in Venezuela sometime in the second half of the XIX century. I still carry his Italian surname.
