The French and the Irish were best buddies for a long time. Mostly it's because they are Catholic.

Simply put, after the English civil war being a Catholic was tantamount to being a pagan witch. Mary Tudor left a bad taste in everyone's mouth after her reign and her Spanish husband/nephew's subsequent attempt to invade England as well as the Thirty Years' War in the Holy Roman Empire(mostly in today's Germany). They didn't know what to make of their alligiances and were heavily mistrusted over this. Scotland was Calvinist, the Puritans had taken over England after Charles' execution and Anglo American colonies were overwhelmingly Anglo-Scottish and Dutch Protestant, this stigma against the Irish outlived all the forementioned for years to come so it would follow them there too. Tom Reilly wrote a book about Cromwell and his treatment of Ireland, though he reckoned he was humane even if he was Calvinist zealot and the Irish could've fared worse under others.

The Protestant "Irish" are mainly British, not Irish; they're Scottish and English migrants who have a British identity; they're more nationalist Brit than actual people from the island of Britain.

Anyway, no one looks down upon Irish anymore, maybe historically but not in the present tense.
