His claim that modern China has no ties to ancient China is bollocks. He's exaggerating the effect of the cultural revolution. It's not like China became an entirely different country and culture under a decade.
Much of the current traditional chinese mindset and culture (philosphy, customs, medicine*) has its roots in "old China"

*despite what he claims about Chinese students having to travelling to Japan to learn TCM

Btw if I remember correctly zhaoyun, a now inactive chinese-American forum member claimed cultural revolution was overall a good thing for China, because according to him, it enabled China modernise better and faster.
