They are in a totally different direction from either, but closer to other Europeans, obviously.

I don't think Germany eats so different from, for example, Italy. We share many products. I think Egypt eats more much different in part due to the Muslim culture.
That being said we (Med EU and Med non-EU) probably share some food similarity due to Med culture influences. We should consider that NA has been colonized many times by Europeans during history.

definitely non-euro meds I think....When I hang out with anglo-american types I always feel a little out of place and foreign ethnically, but when I hang with MENA types It feels more natural for me.
same for my parents too: my father had mostly MENA or other Greek roommates and my mother never felt in with the anglo crowd either but she mostly hung out with blacks and latinos which made her develop a really ghetto/redneck accent..

They share more with the non-European Mediterranean countries, except in the Muslim religion, even in the climate they are closer and the architecture is also closer.
In culture it is an intermediate.
And in other phenotypes and genetics the other Europeans win.
One of the best Roman colonies was Tunis, and the Romans took many influences from other civilizations of North Africa and the Levant.

What do you have in common an Italian and a Danish or a Greek and a Scottish? Very few things.
