    Default Question about America.

How did a country that was predominantly native become a predominantly white country in such a small time frame of less than 300 years? America has around 300 million people and the majority of them are of European descent whilst other ex-colonies which are of similar size such as Canada and Australia have much smaller populations in comparison.

My second question is about accents, how did The British who settled there develop such a different way of speaking so quickly? For such a recent country it did transform itself very quickly.

    1) It was sparsely populated I think.

    2) It just takes one generation to drastically change accent. Happened in LatAm too. Even in the UK people do not speak as they used to some 50 years ago.

Europeans were looking for a better life where the could worship their religion as they wanted, own land and basically live free. The pilgrim- English, the Amish Dutch, and the Jews from Eastern Europe are perfect examples of religious persecution that caused these Europeans to immigrate to America. My family fled Southern Italy because they were basically being taxed to death to the point of starvation by the Northern Italians after the unification of Italy. They lost their land, their homes, their ability to farm and had no means of income to support their families so they fled to America for a better life. More than 6 million Italians, 8 million Irish, 10 million Germans Dutch, 12 million English, 3 million Polish and many more millions from France, Russia, Greek, Eastern and Nordic Europe regions. The accents that developed were first regionilized depending on the Europeans that settled in an area. Fore example, New Amsterdam, modern day New York, and Pennsylvania were predominantly Dutch German and later Italian while New England, Connecticut and Massachusetts was predominantly settled by the English and Irish. Even today you can distinctly recognize accents of Americans depending on where they lived. The American accents are very unique because of the many different Europeans that settled here and their distinct phonetic style and words that became mingled with the English language. This is not at all like Australia or New Zealand who's vast majority of immigrants were from England and managed to keep the recognizable English accent. As far as being white in 300 years, the migration from Europe that I listed above occurred over a period of about 200 years and the first 100 years was marked by a mass displacement and elimination of native American people. The period form 1600 through the mid 1800 s was a horrific and very sad time in American history, it was tragic what the Europeans our ancestors did to our great native people

Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Most of the """natives""" in North America died off before colonialism started. Not sure why Canada didn't grow more other than everyone going to the US and South America first. Australia was just too far away from Europe. We have different accents from the British and other Anglo countries because America was colonized before that accent became popular and spread around.

Europeans brought diseases with them that wiped out many native Americans, however, the majority of reduction in population and displacement of American Indians was due to wars with the English and French. The wars lasted for 100 years in the Eastern and mid west of America, and many of our eastern Algonquin speaking tribes became extinct such as the Pequot, the Mohegans. Millions of Native Americans were killed by diseases or war brought on by the original English, Dutch and French settlers. The Italians, Spanish and Portuguese were the first Europeans to travel to the United States, however, it was the British, Dutch and French who settled the original colonies and can be linked to the American French Indian wars, and the associated massacres of our native peoples.
