'Non Angli, sed angeli, si forent Christiani.' – "They are not Angles, but angels, if they were Christian". Aphorism, summarising words reported to have been spoken by Pope Gregory I when he first encountered pale-skinned English boys at a slave market, sparking his dispatch of St. Augustine of Canterbury to England to convert the English, according to Bede.
He said: "Well named, for they have angelic faces and ought to be co-heirs with the angels in heaven."
Discovering that their province was Deira (an Anglo Saxon Kingdom in England,) he went on to add that they would be rescued de ira, "from the wrath".

I'd heard of the Frisians as I remember that I became intrigued in wanting to learn more about the Frisians while I was a teen in my secondary school. My schoolteachers never taught us anything about the Frisians at school, but I remember reading-up a bit about the Frisians at home as I was very curious about them.
I remember being taught about Anglo Saxons in my first school year in my Church of England primary school in Kent. We were also taken on school day trips to learn about and explore inside the historic local castles there... and we went on another school outing another time to look at the historic scene of the Battle of Hastings.
My junior school in Dorset mostly taught us about the Tudors during history lessons.... and in my senior/secondary school, we learned a lot about Native Amerindian cultures and American history.
