Porque latino é classificado como uma etnia?

Eu fico confusa em relação a isso. Etnia é um grupo de pessoas que compartilham a mesma cultura. Latino é apenas um termo para pessoas que nascem em um país que tem como língua oficial uma língua latina. Ponto. Mas muitos sites americanos classificam latinos como uma etnia. Por exemplo: Neymar ethnicity latino. Lionel Messi ethnicity latino. Um argentino e brasileiro tem a mesma etnia? Isso não é errado? Todo mundo é classificado igual pra eles. Como se todo mundo tivesse a mesma etnia.

Isto é coisa de estadunidense. "Latino" seria um termo melhor se o mesmo funcionasse - somente - para fazer alusão à procedência do indivíduo. Exemplo: Brasileiro é latino, porque ele vem da América Latina - e o mesmo vale para colombianos, venezuelanos, etc. O pior é que os latino americanos importam esta mentalidade idiota. Brasileiros usando aquele lixo do "One Drop Rule", como se a realidade social do Brasil fosse a mesma dos EUA.

I mean, is more easy to classify all people of mexican background as "latin" than check their genetic background or placing them in the traditional cateogories as black, white or native american since most of them aren´t that. Eu estava relendo novamente esses dias uma pesquisa de 2015 na qual confirmou que apenas 4% dos brasileiros se definem como Latinos, uma média inferior a de outros povos, como o Argentino, Chileno (43%)...
A impressão que tenho é que para muitos o termo "Latino" é sinônimo de Hispano-Americano e como o Brasil é lusófono, ele pode não ser visto como tal por alguns.
Mas o Brasil é um país lusófono (uma língua de origem latina), essa característica por si só já o torna um país latino, idem para a predominância do catolicismo (assim como nos hermanos), bom, essa é a minha opinião.

I reckon it's gotten to the point in which Latin Americans themselves have begun to refer to themselves as such. This wasn't something we simply called a bunch letftover half castes largely bred by the Spanish, bare in mind Rudolf Valentino and Louis Jourdan were the latin lovers of yore in American Media and they had no roots in the Americas. This mostly began to be used when we were getting too many of them to realistically blend into the greater popuplace and it sounds nicer somewhat than "racially ambigious mongrel". This cuts both ways we get called Anglo by them even if we travel abroad looking like Al Pacino or Eddie Murphy and the Central or South American doing that, has a surname like Schmidt or Hildebrand.
