Default What was the Western Hunter Gatherer (WHG) phenotype?

They clearly were not light-skinned (La Braña 1 and Loschbour carry several ancestral skin-pigmentation alleles [Olalde et al 2014]), yet they had caucasian skull morphologies and light colored eyes. What modern populations best exemplify their phenotype? l3OIezy6.jpg

No modern population totally resemble them, some Northern Europeans have more traits inherited from them. In the same way, Peruvian or Mexican Mestizos don't resemble totally Spaniards or AMerindians, but have traces inherited from both.

Between European Hunter Gatherers, neolithic farmers and Steppe IE folks we have an amazing time gap (more than 30k in some cases). The idea that all these people were the same ''race'' is more than arbitrary, it's ridiculous.

I guess I imagine them as closest to dark Balts.

    Spoiler!

Indeed, it is difficult to tell because they were genetically pure WHG and yet these genes are widespread, but not dominant in all contemporary European nations.

Some individuals perhaps could be found, but if I'm not mistaken, wouldn't search in Eastern Europe where was EGH, but in Western Europe. Perhaps old and isolated populations like Basques (autosomally speaking, not per Y-DNA)?

Western Hunter Gatherers were one of the ghost populations of Europe along with Early Neolithic Farmers and Ancient North Eurasians. Western Hunter Gatherers spreaded all round Europe and adjacent regions but could not maintain their ethnic identitities and therefore got assimilated and also their genes are diluted by the host populations. Since their original phenotype does not exist anymore, anthropologists most probably did not give a name to such phenotype. However, among the non-extinct phenotypes, it looks like Paleo-Atlantid the most.

Depends on if you count Scandinavian Hunter Gatherers in that group or not, all Native European phenotypes descend from Cro-Magnid, Brunn and Borreby are the two untouched paleothic types for the North, the South and East would have been Cro-Magnoid as well but some of their phenotypes are more archaic looking.
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Are you on crack man, hunter gather phenotypes are absurdly common, Borreby and Brunn are two of the most prevalent Northern European phenotypes.

You are right that Borreby and Brünn are very common in Northern Europe but Northern Europeans are not 100% WHG. They have WHG admixture.

Most people on here that are from WHG-SHG haplogroups have pretty high native admixture, the science on gene selection and expression is pretty shaky and revolves around mostly "it's random theory"
