David Baddiel warns of 'more insidious' Holocaust denial as he makes new BBC film

David Baddiel has warned of "more insidious" Holocaust denial as he makes a new BBC film to keep the memory of survivors alive.

The comedian will investigate the history and modern face of Holocaust denial in the new film the BBC Factual announced today.

Mr Baddiel, 55, said: "I’ve always had a dark fascination with Holocaust Denial. The fact that since it happened (indeed whilst it was happening) forces have tried to undermine one of the most well-documented truths of history seems to me a key battleground in the fight between truth and lies, a battle made more complex by the emergence of new technology, a post-truth world and more insidious, 'soft core' forms of denial."

Mr Baddiel, whose mother was a refugee of Nazi Germany, has described himself as a "Jewish atheist".

There is something about this topic that keeps on irking me. While the event, an sich, is an historical fact, there will certainly always be things that should be debated just like all other historical events (there is always more than one viewpoint) but if State power (and, particularly, a foreign power) becomes involved in banning debates around a certain topic - then that should lead people to conclude that the official story is, at least, partially, a blatant lie and that they have something to hide. In other words: a ban on holocaust denial feeds holocaust denial.

David Baddiel deliberately misleads his viewers by portraying clothing fumigation buildings as homicidal gas chambers. The clothing fumigation facilities were used to prevent Jews from dying, not to kill Jews.
