Default "A Guerilla Campaign In Macedonia": 1904

A great read about the Macedonian struggle against the Ottomans. This is only one of many stories of abuse the natives faced in the hands of the Ottomans. And how regular Macedonians took up arms to fight back against the tyranny. It's centred around the village of Razlog, in present day south west Bulgaria, within the geographical Macedonian region.

The female warrior in this story interests me alot. She was so fierce, and so respected by the men around her.

"Not long after this we received orders to return to Bulgaria..."

And whenever the fatherland called, the children obeyed.

We see that Americans were ignorant even back then.

In many articles, not only Macedonians can be seen as something distinct in a sentence along with Bulgarians and Greeks. "Thracians" are also present.

Crazy. Obviously Bulgaria was a place of refuge from the Ottoman Empire. The same way the Bulgarians used to go for refuge in Serbia before their independence. They would go into Bulgaria, discuss, rearm, then jump back into Macedonia to fight.

Why? What that I said was wrong? Macedonians went to Sofia and had commitee meetings and then went back into Macedonia.

Your historical figure Georgi Rakovski/Popovich used to go to Belgrade. It was a way to organise revolutions, and discuss ideas that were not permitted in the Ottoman Empire. Ofcourse Rakovski was not Serb though.

First of all, the Bulgarian emigration towards Serbia for organising revolution wasn't that massive. You cannot compare it with the actions of VMRO in Bulgaria.

Second, Macedonians weren't considered as foreigners in Bulgaria, the same way Bulgarians in Serbia were regarded. They took high positions in the country....like Aleksandar Protogerov for example, one of my favourite figures from that period of history.

Correct. Macedonians today need to realise the pivotal role Bulgaria has played throughout our history. We used to look to Bulgaria for salvation, not as an enemy.

Georgi Sava Stoykov Rakovski/Popovic was a man of many names. He even studied at the Greek Orthodox University, and at one point changed his name to Stephanidis (or something like that). But regardless of his influences from Greeks and Serbs, he is considered nothing else but Bulgarian.

Same thing with Macedonians. Even though they studied in Bulgarian, Greek and Serbian schools, they still had a Macedonian identity above all others.

At one point, yes, Bulgaria was a safe havan for us in history. Thanks to the fact they gained independence before us. But a lot of the brotherhood was undone during world war II when they decided to side with Nazis.
