During the Pleistocene, from 2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago. It's probable that the prehistoric men hunted the down to extinction, their tiny size didn't help them to survive.

In Sardinia there were three species, one native only of Sardinia (Mammuthus lamarmorae), a dwarf wooly mammuth, and the others widespread also on the other islands of the Mediterranean. (Palaeoloxodon antiquus, Palaeoloxodon melitensis).

These species arrived on the islands from the continent during the glacyal age, when the sea level was 100mt lower than today, Sardinia and Corsica formed a single island, and were united to the continent with a narrow bridge of land.

According to the findings the last of these dwarf elephants-mammuth lived in Rhodes until 2000 b.C.
