This theory can easily be disproved through the use of simple Arabic. The verse of the Qur'an mentions "Fawalli wajhaka Shatra-l" Shatr is a word that can be used in the way of (Mecca), but it asserts a very big turn, one that is not present if diverting from Jerusalem to Petra. Shatr also signifies the turn was a significant one to the opposite side. Dan Gibson ignored this verse and basic auestions like why would Ibn al-Zubayr choose Mecca which is barren land, instead of Ta'if which is actually nearer to him than Mecca, and Ta'if is a very known city in which agriculture thrived in there, and the weather there is perfect since it's relatively high (~1600 m ASL).
