Join FRANCE 24 as we take a look at how we celebrate "Noël" in France. French people tend to have a big family lunch on Christmas Day, but the big day is in fact on Christmas Eve. Called the "réveillon de Noël", it involves eating traditional French dishes like oyster, foie gras, chestnut-stuffed turkey and a delicious log-shaped cake. Essentially, celebrating Christmas in France is all about eating until you pop. Joyeux Noël!

Prior to 1940, nobody had any real problems with the Germans. In fact - the Dutch preferred them over to the Brits (who had not just destroyed our financial position as early as the 1600s and had killed blood of our blood in South Africa) and French (traditional enemies) for rather obvious reasons at the time. The Nazi's made sure that even the word German was a swearword for over 40 years. The fact that when Crown Princess Beatrix followed the traditional path by marrying a German back in 1966 (Princess, later Queen, Juliana had married the Prince of Lippe-Biesterfeld in 1938, Princess and later Queen Wilhelmina had married the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901), the, people responded by throwing a smoke bomb at the cortège and that even a non-native Dutchman like Frank Rijkaard felt such revulsion towards the Germans that he made a scene by spitting at Rudi Völler as recently as the 1990 World Cup, should show the pure hatred and discord the Nazi's managed to sow between two brother nations. It took decades to rebuild that trust ! (thanks to the Nazi's because without them this problem would never have existed in the first place). The Brits and French suddenly became very popular here (and the Brits still are to this very day !) Pro-European ? I think we should let history do the talking for us.
