One of the key players in the English team (6ft tall 24 year old Helen Housby from Carlisle) has a zoology degree from university. She continues to pursue her love of animals as a new resident of Sydney, Australia (where she now plays for NSW Swifts), enjoying the presence of creatures as diverse as dolphins, kangaroos and koalas.

Helen was a key member of the England netball team that won the gold medal match against Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia - she scored in the final second of the game to give victory to England by one point.

The England team had beaten Jamaica in the semi-final match (by just one point, also at the very last moment). Jamaica had narrowly defeated England in Glasgow 2014 to take the bronze medal.

By the time Housby was selected in the final 12-player squad for England's 2019 Netball World Cup campaign, she had 58 caps to her name.

Meanwhile, I can hear lots of cheering outside as I live close to Lord's Cricket Ground (a.k.a 'The Home Of Cricket.') where the World Cup Final is currently being played right now at the moment between New Zealand and England.

England's netball team caused a huge upset at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after beating tournament favourites Australia in the final seconds of the match. The win put England in the history books as the first time a team other than Australia or New Zealand have claimed the title .

England stunned Australia with a penalty shot on the siren to win netball gold!

The English Lionesses football team (above) did well in the World Cup in France this year (despite the intense heatwave) and came fourth in the semi-fnals after the U.S., Netherlands, and Sweden.

Naismith earned a BA in physical education (1888) and a diploma at the Presbyterian College in Montreal (1890).

From 1891 on, Naismith taught physical education and became the first McGill director of athletics, but then left Montreal to become a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

After Naismith had settled into New England in the U.S., he invented the game of basketball in 1891 which he based on 'Duck on a rock' - a medieval children’s game.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Naismith

'Netball emerged from early versions of basketball and evolved into its own sport as the number of women participating in sports increased.

Naismith's game spread quickly across the United States and variations of the rules soon emerged. Physical education instructor Senda Berenson developed modified rules for women in 1892; these eventually gave rise to women's basketball. Around this time separate intercollegiate rules were developed for men and women.

Martina Bergman-sterberg introduced a version of basketball in 1893 to her female students at the Physical Training College in Hampstead, London. The rules of the game were modified at the college over several years: the game moved outdoors and was played on grass; the baskets were replaced by rings that had nets; and in 1897 and 1899, rules from women's basketball in the United States were incorporated.

sterberg's new sport acquired the name "net ball". The first codified rules of netball were published in 1901 by the Ling Association, later the Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom.

From England, netball spread to other countries in the British Empire. Variations of the rules and even names for the sport arose in different areas: "women's (outdoor) basketball" arrived in Australia around 1900 and in New Zealand from 1906, while "netball" was being played in Jamaican schools by 1909.'

Netball has the following advantages: true team sport (no ball hogs allowed), doesn’t matter size/ability level a position on court for everyone, great hand/eye coordination and teaches spacial awareness. A great feeder sport for basketball.

Netball player positions are marked with letters on bibs over their tops:

    Goal Keeper (GK)
    Goal Defence (GD)
    Wing Defence (WD)
    Centre (C)
    Wing Attack (WA)
    Goal Attack (GA)
    Goal Shooter (GS)

I played netball at my junior and senior schools as it's taught in the U.K. to all schoolgirls during P.E. lessons, whilst the boys play cricket and football.

Rounders (a historic English game which is very similar to the U.S. version of rounders known as 'baseball') is very popular and played by both boys and girls in U.K. junior schools and sometimes also in senior/secondary schools too.
