Wow I never knew British folks even liked cricket that much. I thought you guys were all into football/soccer. Its such an underrated sport outside the subcontinent. Glad this win means something huge to england. Maybe this will create more interest in cricket among england’s youth.

Cricket was invented in England and is generally more popular amongst the middle classes and upper classes in England. (Not so much in Scotland and Wales and NI.)

I rarely watch it, but was forced to attend cricket matches with my father as a child at the well-known cricket field in Sevenoaks in Kent, and we'd sit in the audience there and quietly watch as children as my father is an avid lover of cricket. I hated it as a child as it bored me, but I was forced to quietly sit and watch the cricket matches.

Whenever my father came home from work, he'd switch-off our children's programmes on TV, and would switch the cricket on TV instead. He was always watching it at home too. He'd switch the volume off the TV and would listen to commentary on his portable radio instead whilst watching it on TV (he preferred the radio commentary.) He'd always have cricket commentary playing on the radio in his car, and would carry a portable pocket TV around with him to watch the cricket.

Schoolboys here often play it in schools.

My dad also used to play cricket in the garden of our cottage with a retired headmaster who would stay at our cottage during the summer holidays.

I heard so much loud cheering outside my home yesterday (I live close to Lord's Cricket Ground) that I just knew from all the cheering sounds outside that an important cricket match was being played. Cricket always makes me think of my father.

I'm just happy the team won because I know my father will be happy (even though I've not seen him since my childhood and we became estranged,) but I'm thinking of him and I know he'll be pleased.

Lord's Cricket Ground - 'The Home Of Cricket.'

It's a popular sport in the British Commonwealth Nations too as a legacy from the cultural influence of the British Empire in those nations... especially in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies/Caribbean Isles, Pakistan and India.

The current Prime Minister of Pakistan is the former international cricket playing star Imran Khan.

'Cricket is one of the most popular sports in England, and has been played since the 16th century. Marylebone Cricket Club, based at Lord's, developed the modern rules of play and conduct.'

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_in_England

There are eighteen professional county clubs, seventeen of them in England and one in Wales.

All eighteen counties are named after, and were originally representative of, historic counties. These clubs are heavily dependent on subsidies from the England and Wales Cricket Board, which makes its money from television and endorsement contracts and attendances at international matches.

The English cricket season traditionally starts at the beginning of April and runs though to the second half of September although in recent years counties have played pre season friendly matches at the very end of March.

Each summer the county clubs compete in the first class County Championship, which consists of two leagues of nine teams and in which matches are played over four days. The same teams also play one day cricket in the Royal London One-Day Cup, and Twenty20 cricket in the Vitality T20 Blast.

The Minor Counties Cricket Championship is a season-long competition in England for county clubs that do not have first-class status. There are nineteen teams representing historic English counties along with a Welsh minor counties team.

Below the county game, there are a raft of club competitions organised on a regional basis. ECB Premier Leagues being the highest level. There are also non-ECB-affiliated leagues such as the Bradford Cricket League, the Lancashire League and the Central Lancashire League.
I've noticed that football is more popular with the working-class people here.... whereas cricket, tennis, and rugby are generally enjoyed by the middle classes in England (although there's working class fans amongst the players and spectators too.)

British and American marines playing cricket together.

An American enjoying a game of cricket in India where the sport is also very popular.

India has some very fast bowlers.

Fast bowlers can be lethal and some players have been killed by them. I was accidentally hit by a rock-hard cricket ball as a child when my dad was playing a game of cricket with his friend in our garden, and it bruised my shin. I had a massive bruise on my leg for two weeks. My father only hit the ball gently... but it still hurt a lot. So it must be excrutiatingly painful to be hit when professional superfast bowlers hit the rock-hard ball at extremely fast speeds.

And the Caribbean Islanders (West Indies) and South Africa have good teams too, along with Australia, NZ, and England.

It was a World Cup Final, so cricket fans from across the globe arrived to watch the event at Lord's in London.

    England population = 55,619,400

Definitely unfair on NZ that we won on boundaries, which is bollocks and arbitary. Should've done another super over.

England didn't win. Quite clearly, there were bad calls by the umpires. Simply, they should have added 10 overs and if no clear winner, added another 10 overs. In such circumstances, the odds would've been in favour of England but at least it would have been played until a clear winner emerged.
