Hate to break it to you, but it's not that hard to warp your name from Schmidt to Smith or from Muller to Miller, Braun to Brown or Weiss to White. It happened way too often and many of those are just ocupational surnames, with cognates in German. Especially when the host country has a very open animosity towards you due to the large arrivals and will fight two World Wars in the coming century against the country that spawned you. America becoming a German speaking nation was a HUGE fear people here genuinely had.
Many of the people that bare those British names are black. Most Welsh names in the states like James, Davis, Jenkins, Owens and Jones often belong to them, for instance. If you want to claim them as kin, have at it, they're often mixed with British. Just letting you know.

I literally couldn't care less about you accepting anything. Identity and actual ancestry are two separate things - I have no problem accepting I'm neither on paper, but that doesn't affect my own perception in any way.

IMO it's overrated. No names were changed at Ellis Island, and many so-called Anglicised names are identifiable as non-British or likely non-British.

If you are going of Last names, British by far. Statistics don't mean squat, 7 out of 10 Americans have a English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh last name.
