23andMe has been in the process of adding "Genetic Groups" to the various regions. This is different from the "Country Matches" tool that they currently employ in all regions. Genetic Groups seems to be more akin to AncestryDNA's Communities. I was hoping French & German was next in line to get Genetic Groups. But with the breach and also the general decline of the company, my confidence for continued innovation is fading.

I had Thuringia which was very weird to me, but since I have ancestry from Fulda district that is near Thuringia I guess it's not that outrageous to get.

An interesting result. And it makes sense considering the told ancestry.

My 23andMe (V4 chip, not updated anymore since July 2021) regions in the FRG are almost inverted compared to my ancestry.

    - I've zero ancestry hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse (summarisingly you can say that the conditions for the last 300-400 years are known).

    - I've essentially zero ancestry hailing from Bavaria. Abt. 0.1% of my ancestry is from there 10 generations ago and if you trace that tiny proportion farther back, it doesn't even hail from Bavaria but from Austria and Western Bohemia.

    - I've abt. 3% ancestry from Baden-Württemberg so depicting it is okay.

    - The depiction of Saxony is okay.

    - From Thuringia I also just have some 1-2% of ancestry but much is in directly bordering Saxony-Anhalt.

    Conclusion:

This 23andMe tool seems a catastrophe. I also don't know how they want to have gathered the required information that they base these regions on. They hardly support any trees and just ask for where the four grandparents were born and they know where the purchasers of tests do reside. I've the impression that they in some way do connect to post WWII resident conditions.

The correct map would have looked something like this (quick & dirty):

Well, I hadn't looked at my mother's result in a long time and I forget it's actually pretty good. Basically, the correct regions are highlighted. Also, in Poland she get's Greater Poland Voivodeship, which is in fact where we have German ancestors from.

I still eagerly anticipate the eventual release of the "Genetic Groups" feature for the French & German category. Rothaer's example, and many others, show the inconsistency in the current "Country Matches" feature.

As I understand it, this is showing where clusters of your relatives, who have reported that they have 4 grandparents from the region, live now. So, in theory, this could be showing migration from Northern and Eastern Germany, to the South. Perhaps this took place several generations before grandparent level, as I assume it's possible these locations represent a volume of your distant matches, not necessarily your close matches? Just speculation on my part.
