It's likely the existence of Atlanto-Mediterranean, Nordic, Dinaric, Cro-Magnon and to a degree Alpine elements in both states which causes the similarity. The French are more Northern and definitely more Western shifted than us as a total mix though.
Genetically it's one of the Western states we have a good overlap with (less than with Switzerland and Austria, anyway).
We are almost equally removed from Czechs (1,21) and French (1,22).
