They are both from the upper Midwest (Great Lakes region where the ship sank) and liked this kind of 70s folk music so there was a bit of a connection. There is something about it that sounds like an old rollicking sailors song. It hit me on a visceral level that I have trouble articulating. I also really like the song you posted and it is very familiar to me.
Yes he was a very good man. He did everything for his family. A lot of the words really resonate with me and I wasn't there on the morning he died and it was a shock that he was gone. Anyway people should not take for granted the people they love because there will be a time when they aren't here.

Gordon Lightfoot's song is amazing. It is a beautiful homage to the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He's immortalised them with this powerful ballad and it does have the feel of some seafaring legend from a bygone era. He has a great way with words. Those Great Lakes are very treacherous. The Edmund Fitzgerald is the largest ship to have sunk there.

For me this is no more evident than with the lyrics „Now what's done is done and what's won is won
And what's lost is lost and gone forever„. It always leaves me in shivers.

About Derry. It is the best song about "The Troubles".

A serbian song, about the death of a friend, because my dad listened to it 2010/11 when his childhood friend commited suicide, my dad was very sad and whenever my dad was sad i was crying, im used to my mum being sad and shed tears but i couldnt handle seeing my dad, that strong male being sad and shed a tear. Also my dad died himself soon after, and i associated also with the loss of my dad.

It's "Alone Again Naturally", which now hits too close to home. It's even before my time, but I lost both parents (one at a very young age) and I lost my soul mate, so I avoid the song like toxic waste. It's by Gilbert O'Sullivan. You can tell by his name that he's either German or Polish.
