    Interesting thread. Monogamy could've been common in neolithic times.

    An important feature of the Neolithic tribes of herdsmen were double graves, which at the same time was buried a husband and wife. In fact, these graves testify that the herders would kill the wife of the deceased in order to put her beside her husband in the grave.

    I assume the Romans and Greeks were more "Indo-European" culturally.

    Just a thought.

    Ironically, Charlemagne, (or Charles la Merde, or Karl der Scheisse as I like to call him) was himself a polygamist.
    Yes, at the end of the day we are going off the word of one man but it's an interesting account nevertheless. As far as Charlemagne goes, I'm not surprised he had his share of women.

    Good point. Marija Gimbutas, for what it is worth, would have probably document this to some degree. I've only read one of her books and it didn't cover this. It's worth looking into.

    His fare share of women was due to common social structure among all the IE cultures where chieftains, or the wealthy dudes, had first dibs on females. There are plenty of examples;

    Samo founded the first recorded political union of Slavic tribes, known as Samo's Empire (realm, kingdom, or tribal union)

    Spouse: At least twelve Wendish noblewomen

    By this time, Slavics and Germanics were heavily influenced By Roman culture.

    These are just theories of course. There was always cheating going on and children born our of a NPE. It's human nature. Tacticus obviously found these tribes to be more humble as opposed to his own folk.

    Off topic, but you think King Samo needs to do some lower body dead lifts to build those legs? He looks confused and doesn't scare me.

    He was a wealthy merchant so It didn't matter what he looked like but his shield is interesting. Only a wealthy man can afford that style of shield which is probably why it was painted that way. A status symbol. Usually common soldiers never had a shield or they had cheaply made round shields. I guess that's a great depiction of him either way!

    I miss the day when shields meant something.

    Are Germanic tribes more loyal to their women than the Italians/Romans? What are your thoughts?
