All of the Allied forces that attacked Cassino were repulsed by the defending German paratroops, including the Poles whose initial attack was a failure. The Poles raised their flag over the monastery after the Germans withdrew (after halting the Poles dead in their tracks) to avoid being encircled by breakthroughs elsewhere on the Gustav line. No one can deny the Polish troops were exceptionally brave, tho.
