The funny part of the Norman "Greatness" is that it took them much more time to conquer South Italy from Arabs than whole England...

In term of cultural achievements they are irrelevants... at least in Italy but pretty much in general.

Even the Arabs did much more with innovations.

Anyway.. We conquered England easily because the Anglos where distracted and depleted by our viking cousins. We were only a distinct ethnic group for a short period of time so don't have as much intellectual achievements we can call our own compared to age old ethnic groups. We where quickly absorbed by Britain and France where our descendants did great things. The general area of Northern France is a region with among the greatest concentrations of historical intellectual achievement in the world. Whether speaking Normand or not they are our ancestors and descendants.

Hastings was a close thing. If Harold had waited a few days to rest his army and complete the assembly of the fyrd he would have had good chances to win. The Normans were isolated in the Southeast and the English fleet dominated the sea. William gambled and took a big risk, but in the end it paid off.

Probably the biggest innovation the Normans started is that, in the Duchy of Normandy, the peasantry only consisted of free farmers who never underwent serfdom, contrary to all other countries in Europe (except to some extent Sweden).

We Normans were the ones who introduced the reign of law and made so that ultimately European civilization equated freedom.

OK, when we conqueered foreign lands we became ruthless rulers, but a conquest is never supposed to be about coolness.
