Given the differences in IBD, physical appearance and yDNA/mtDNA I guess Ashkenazi Jews and Sicilians/Calabrians/Cretans overlap by ''coincidence''. Despite being half Middle Eastern genetically (Sicilians/Calabrians/Cretans are a bit more European though, being 60-70% Euro and the rest Levantine) Ashkenazim on average look whiter than many South Euro groups, including groups further north like Iberians and Tuscans.
Defining ''European'' is difficult, but I think they have enough shared history with Europe to be considered ''Europeans''.
Just correcting a point: the only South Italians overlapping with Ashkenazi Jews are Sicilians/Calabrians (and only a part of them, some Calabrians and Sicilians overlap with mainland Greeks), so stop using ''South Italians'' as a whole because it's incorrect. South Italy is much bigger than Sicily and southern Calabria.
