I'm not sure about German Americans (Peterski may know)
but in Canada they're mostly from Ex Austro-Hungarians lands, Ex Soviet countries, Prussia, Baden-Wurttemberg, rhineland.
For example Saskatchewan;

My gg grandpa came from "Germany" in the 1900s but no idea where, I'm assuming he is represented as the eastern euro in my dad and I.

When I lived in PA Dutch Country, most of the German-Americans had ancestry from southern and western Germany, including Amish and Mennonites. I'm sure that is true throughout much of America, esp the Midwest.
