This is probably a 'down to earth' equivalent of believing in Atlantis. As if they were all philosophers back then. It must have been a shift in the demographics.

If the silicon valley would be covered in lava somehow, archeologists in the future would discover a civilization that was seemingly full of geniuses, when this is practically not even the case. Just a higher concentration of people with better brains.

The amount of great men produced by many Greek city states was inordinately high compared to their small populations so I wouldn't be surprised.
