You can have dual nationality here. I have both Irish and Australian and I can pass on Irish to my children and grandchildren. It is the best of both worlds so I feel very fortunate. You can't have dual nationality if you are in Government. Parliamentarians cannot have dual citizenship but the majority of Australians can. Parliamentarians have to renounce their citizenship in other countries. Basically it is up to the Government of your country if they allow you to retain your birth citizenship if you apply for another citizenship. I had a friend who was born in India and had Australian citizenship. She married a London Jew and lived in the UK for a time but if she wanted to have British citizenship she would have to lose her Australian citizenship so she chose to keep her Australian citizenship. If she was born in Australia and gained British citizenship from a parent she could have retained both citizenships. My descendants can have both Irish and Australian. So you can keep the citizenship of your birth and parents. Another example would be an American that gained Australian citizenship. If they wanted to get British citizenship they would have to choose between British and Australian as they could not keep both.
