Worldwide, an average of 800,000 people die by suicide every year, according to a new World Health Organization Report. Officials urge tighter control on lethal means to reduce deaths.

In the US, recent research from Ohio State University found that suicide rates have increased by as much as 40 percent since 1999.

It's odd, suicide rates are pretty steady over the decades in general, and the distribution of proportions to countries aren't at all what anyone would expect: it seems pretty random.

I think genetics has a lot to do with it, and there's at least one SNP for that (Rs53576)... Lots of people who have horrible, meaningless or tragic lives might go on smiling while other people off themselves because of some awkward experience or nightmare.
