But accents and nasal voices are two different things. A person's voice is not the same as their accent. They are two different mediums. Someone with a different accent doesn't necessarily have a nasal voice. That is a misconception. The General American accent is pretty close to many counties in England, such as Suffolk , Devon, and Somerset. The Americans do speak higher pitched than the British, but that doesn't equal nasality. It's more way the voice rise and falls. The Irish speak more highly pitched as well. Some Irish have nasal voices, others do not. John Lennon and Princess Anne talks through her nose. Not all English do. It's all upon the individual.

I agree though that Cockney is rough and a lot of them scare me. Traditional cockney was friendlier sounding, such as Dick van Dyke impersonating a cockney accent in Mary Poppins.... but modern cockney is associated more with east end gangsters.

It's kind of like NYC has a variety of accents like London has a variety of upper class/posh, middle class, and lower class accents... which are generally heard more in the poorer and rougher east end of London. The West End is the area where most of the wealth is distributed and where most of the tourists visit. The royal palace homes are also in Westminster, Hyde Park, etc. Manhattan accents differ from the rougher accents in the Bronx.

This born-and-bred Londoner below scares me a bit. 7:30

I don't think many West Country English people moved to the U.S. compared to the amount of Irish and German settlers there. (Well the U.S. is a mix of lots of people, including British, French, Spanish, and Dutch settlers there too.... and I think all the different settlers there have played a role in forming U.S. accents.) Jamaicans also talk with a rhotic R due to the Irish influence there too.

I think you are not used to listening to German. I speak German and it sounds as European as Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.

Never felt this and I am also studying it. Maybe it sounds so to native Anglo speaking ears.

Germans have almost Oriental sounding accents because... for centuries their Eastern neighbours were Slavs.
