Default Do you consider diasporas a seperate community?

At what point do ethnic groups in diaspora form a seperate identity? 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation???

Is it when the language is lost? Is it when they've mixed with other ethnicities?

Can they integrate back into their ancestral homelands?

I think it's mostly about race/ethnic separation, a group that has evolved independently (and has mixed) from their native population can be considered as a different population.

However if they do retain their genetic heritage you can say that they form an "extension" of the national community.

It only takes one generation for the new identity IMO. It's about the culture they were raised in, even if they still speak the old language. I've seen it in friends who have immigrant parents but were born and raised in America and I've experienced it myself. I know my father and I wouldn't fit in very well if we were dropped back in Germany even though we're familiar with the culture and language because we've been molded so much by America. I also know people in the old countries don't really feel a connection to diasporas, at least when it comes to Europeans.

2nd generation, from my experience. Although, I’ve met some people who are 5th, 6th, 10th gen and they still have an identity based on their heritage.

More or less both but mostly the second.

Can they integrate back into their ancestral homelands?
    Hard to say.

    Hard to say.
Depends on the ethnic group in question. Even in the States, Italian-Americans for example will generally bring up the fact that they are Italian(at least partially) more often than an Anglo-American would mention his/her British/Germanic roots even if they are 4th-6th generation Italian.
