A few generations probably. Bonus points if you're European American or African American.

At least two generations or 100 years to truly assimilate. First generation Greeks who arrived in the US circa 1890's are probably more assimilated than Italians who remained in urban hubs and remained tied to their traditions. My family moved out west (Wyoming) or South (Florida) during the 1890's and early 1900's and were compelled to change as opposed to groups who remained comfortably in cities like NY or Boston and could adhere to "old world" traditions. I can't speak for Greeks, Italians (or whoever) who arrived in the mid 20th century.

your primary attachment has to be to the United States. Obviously foreigners will have some attachment to their country of origin. If her primary attachment is to Ukraine, or wherever the hell she is from, then I would not consider her to truly be an American.

And its not true that that only applies to minority groups. If you sound foreign, people will think you're foreign in general. Noone really consider Arnold Schwarzenegger a true american lol; my portuguese professor has been here for years but has a strong, unintelligible, foreign accent so obviously no-one thinks of him as some kind of American lol, certainly not just because he's portuguese......

I think many american forum members disagree with you. You seem to be more liberal then some others. To me thats good that you are and I agree with you but it seems not everyone does.

Actually I would consider African Americans to be some of the most American people in America. Most western euro americans and african americans in america have true lines and generations of history here, and imo that is the typical American. Most Americans would care much more about assimilation than the color of your skin (in fact I have never met an American who would say otherwise)... The whitest European guy who comes to America for a day and speaks perfect English is not at all American... but the African American man whose family built themselves up in America for centuries is a true American. That doesn't mean immigrants who contribute to society here and assimilate are not American, but my point is that the American identity is usually stronger when someone's roots run deep here.

It's true that The most "American" people are probably the European/African Americans who've been here so long that they do not even know when their ancestors got here, who they were, or specifically where they came from.these peoples do not have any nation other than the United States to pledge loyalty to.

The most american people are the ones who identified as "american" on the US census. I guess. There are a few in the south mostly who identified their ethnicity as "american" not "german, french or polish" etc.
