Yep, Anglospheric media (especially The Economist) love to depict French economy as State-controlled.

Just as good, or rather just as bad, as the British ones.
The Economist says the UK is the model to follow and France is an abject failure, but both countries have exactly the same GDP per capita (purchasing power parity). So I'm not that impressed. Whatever The Economist says.

The French with their "statist" model, managed to build a high speed train and have a functioning space program and are, up to now, self-sufficient. The Brits on the other hand failed their high speed train, have no real space program and have to import everything. No further questions. I like Britain and its culture but sometimes, they really need to get their head out of their behind. Same for the rest of us btw.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

By "self-sufficiency", I take it you mostly mean the Common Agricultural Policy?

Yes. Which made sure that Europeans can actually eat. I am sorry but that piece of glory goes to the French ! They did a good one there: we no longer rely on imported grain or food like before the war which led to immediate starvation during the two world wars when shipments were made impossible. But, of course, you know that.. you just don't mention it.

Well yes, I support the CAP, especially now that more of it is directed towards land conservation rather than just automatic direct payments for farmers. But anyway, I thought you were anti-EU?

The CAP dates back to 1963. EEC. So nice try, but fail. And no, it should be towards food production- not any modern hair-brained schemes that deliberately reduce land availability and thus increase left-wing votes from people that come to rely on handouts.

No one except maybe some extreme right-wing libertarian lunatics thinks that France is socialist in the Soviet or pre-70's Chinese sense. However, compared to most of the developed English-speaking nations (and German-speaking nations, for that matter), it is undeniable that France has higher taxes and spending and more wholly or partially nationalised companies and industries.

The EEC was the precursor to the EU, even though its powers and scope at the time were undoubtedly a lot more limited (not entirely a bad thing either).

Which insulated them from disaster. And before you say right-wing: let's not forget, Mr. Dishonest, that the Left went fully ahead with the privatisation of national services during the 1980s and 1990s in both the Netherlands and the UK (the Blair Years). And you know that as well as I do.

So don't conflate one with the other: they aren't the same thing.
