I've been to Lisbon. Is Coimbra better than Lisbon?

Portugal is underrated gem in Europe.

Coimbra is a city full of history, it was the capital of the newborn Portuguese kingdom until Lisbon became the Capital in 1255 (for more than 100 years Coimbra was our most important city). In top of that it was there where King Dinis (a brilliant king) headquartered the first Portuguese university and one of the oldest in Europe (the third oldest in the Iberian Peninsula) in 1308 ,if I'm not wrong after moving the newly created school from Lisbon (created in 1290) to Coimbra.

It's mostly a students city, during the civil year some 40 000 or 50 000 individuals live in Coimbra because they are related to the University (Students, Staff, etc etc...). For years prior to the independence of Brazil, it was the source of higher education for the Brazilian ellite (mostly descendants of Portuguese settlers), I recall that Bonifacio de Andrada went to Coimbra to study there.


It's best known here as "A Cidade dos Estudantes" (The city of the students). Usualy among highschool teens there is a wish to go to Coimbra, not only because of it's Academic tradition and quality (mainly at engineering and law fields), but also due to it's agitated student nightlife full of new arrivals, veterans and even former students.

In all colleges and universities there is an end of the scholar year festival called "Queima das Fitas". The Coimbra version of it is very radical and awesome!
