Default Are Pomaks Greek or Bulgarian?

Before anybody comes at me, here's why I'm making this question:

Pomaks in Greece consider themselves Greeks and speak Greek almost by exclusivity. Pomaks in Bulgaria are speaking Bulgarian and consider themselves as such.

What of the two is true?

Most likely Pomaks in Greece are from Bulgaria forced to leave at some point in history.

Slavic speaking Muslims from Thrace. Not Bulgarian, and certainly not Greek.

    ?????

Pomaks in Greece consider themselves Turk and speak Turkish in villages. Pomaks in Bulgaria consider themselves Bulgarian. They are Muslim South Slavic speakers, genetically South Slav too.

Karahodza would disagree with you on this. Pomaks here say that they're Greek. In Bulgaria they say they are Bulgarians.

Aren't the Pomaks basically Turkified Muslim Slavs left over from the Ottoman Empire?

Maybe they consider themselves Greek now... just like every culture and people that assimilated to the Greek Ethnogenesis after the Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Balkan Wars. This is true for many ethnic Albanians, Slavs, Gypsies, Bulgarians, The Roma as people call them, Romanians etc. Greece was always a melting pot

Good description of the modern Greek ethnos.

Regarding the OP, they are Muslim Bulgarians

I'm Pomak i know who they are, i grew among them, i don't care what Karahodza say lol. My relatives hardly speak Greek but native in Turkish. Greece Pomaks prefer to identify as Turk and don't use Pomak self-identity most of time.

Did you know that Ibrahim Serif is Pomak and Sadik Ahmet was half Pomak? They are/were the leaders of the Turk community in Thrace despite they are Pomaks.
